Brand new look for TV2 SPORTEN including a completely new graphics package, all new studio interiors and shiftcontrol powered animation.
The new look for TV2 SPORTEN went on air in early April 2008 and shiftcontrol had a hand in the development and implementation in VizRT, the industry standard in real-time 3D for broadcasting. Replacing a design dating back to 2005 the new look was long over due, and came together with a technology upgrade moving TV2 completely over to VizRT.
Long time collaborators Shiftcontrol has worked closely with TV2 since 2004 giving both creative and technical input on a wide range of projects and have been part of the on-going effort to move over all broadcasting to the VizRT platform since early 2006. This commitment started with one of the VizRT pilot projects at TV2, moving all OB (Outside broadcast) production over to VizRT. The new sports graphics package, developed by graphic designer Anders Korsbæk at TV2 and taken through its paces for the first time for the UEFA EURO 2008 Championship marks the final step of that move.
Continuing our previous work Animations for TV2 SPORTEN is loosely based on our previous work with TV2, focusing on the information displayed while keeping on-screen elements to a minimum and using transitions as focus giving cues rather than effects. The package differs from the OB package in that its got a higher branding priority as it is the base for all sports graphics on TV2 and as such comes with a different set of requirements.
The graphics package was part of a bigger project that included all new studio interiors with a back-projected graphics wall and a big LED screen for mood setting and branding graphics.

Shiftcontrol redesigning all live in-game sports graphics for TV2. Based on a simple concept of modular blocks, each piece of on-screen information generates a space for itself by, if necessary, rearranging other blocks that are already present on the screen. The motion of blocks as they are displayed serves as a focus change towards any new information that is introduced on the screen without interfering with the live feed.
The design has been kept minimalist and desaturated in order to work with video feeds of all types and colors. Besides black and white, a range of signal colors are used for special events such as penalties. The overall screen layout has was created to work independent of screen aspect ratio and can be used with both 4:3 and 16:9.
Implemented in Viz[RT], handball, badminton and ice-hockey broadcasted in Denmark now benefits from a new graphics package developed by shiftcontrol and long-time graphics wizard Espen Moe.

TV2 is Denmarks biggest Commercial National broadcaster. The project given to us by Anders Korsbek and Gitte Boel Gammelgaard was to investigate how software could ease the production cycle for TV2Promotion and ensure a strong control of the design guidelines developed by TV2Design, in a way that the software could "play along" and generate the design by itself.
We developed a solution that works on Sequences (Cut lists) exported from TV2Promotion’s Edit workstations and then return a code generated animation as a QuickTime movie with Alpha - ready to be overlayed with the composition and Audio mix on the querying workstation.
The software, dubbed PD04, has been running flawlessly since it introduction mid 2004, and currently generates the presentation design for TV2Denmark, and the cross promotion of TV2Zulu, TV2Charlie, TV2TextTV and TV2.dk.
Working with Processing and Flash during the prototype phase, we switched to our ol’favourite Director/Lingo for the production version. Object-oriented ImageLingo and the wonderful QuickTime Movie Xtra does the heavy work, relying on coordinates from a horde of tweenObjects. All tightly controlled by a custom timerObject - it runs at 25FPS on modern hardware.
